One hour. One expert. Every week.

Workplace Law Talks is a national virtual series of eight one-hour sessions, one every Tuesday from Oct. 6 to Nov. 24, 2026.

Each session pairs a leading employment or labour law expert with a focused presentation and live Q&A, with the last 15 minutes reserved for your questions. Join from your desk over lunch or a morning coffee. No travel, no full day away.

One registration covers the full series, and every session is recorded, so you can catch up on anything you miss.

How it works

  • Eight Tuesdays, 1 to 2 p.m. ET (10 to 11 a.m. PT)
  • An expert presentation, then live Q&A in the last 15 minutes
  • Every session recorded and available on demand
  • Join online from anywhere in Canada or around the world
  • Hosted live by Todd Humber, publisher and editor-in-chief of HR Law Canada

Week1

Navigating complex issues in workplace investigations

What to do when new allegations surface mid-process, how to handle difficult or uncooperative parties, and the newer forms of discrimination investigators need to watch for. Practical tools for keeping investigations focused and defensible.

Nathaniel Marshall, Marshall Workplace Law

Oct. 61 to 2 p.m. ET
Week2

Dismissal in focus: termination clauses, just cause and the post-Baker landscape

The Ontario Court of Appeal's shift from word-by-word review of termination clauses to a contextual reading, what it means for ESA saving language, and what counts as just cause today.

Stuart Rudner, Rudner Law and Rudner ADR

Oct. 131 to 2 p.m. ET
Week3

Top legal issues faced by HR, and what you can do

Termination clauses, the duty to accommodate, leaves of absence and hiring compliance, plus how to coordinate compliance across provinces, including Quebec.

Lai-King Hum, Hum Law Firm

Oct. 201 to 2 p.m. ET
Week4

Birdshots, bullets and bombs: should Canada simplify the workplace claims free-for-all?

How one dismissal can trigger several overlapping claims, how employees use them strategically, and what Canada can learn from the U.K., New Zealand and the unionized sector.

Kelly VanBuskirk, VanBuskirk Law

Oct. 271 to 2 p.m. ET
Week5

Workplace accommodation: the ultimate test of leadership

Why accommodation is a test of leadership, not just a compliance task: the good-faith standard, handling requests that arrive under suspicion, and why treating accommodation purely as risk management backfires.

Peter Vlaar, In Good Counsel

Nov. 31 to 2 p.m. ET
Week6

Departures, competition and confidential information: navigating modern employee mobility

Restrictive covenants, confidentiality obligations, fiduciary duties and urgent injunctions: what holds up in recent case law, and how to protect customers and confidential information when a departure turns competitive.

Matthew Badrov, Isabelle Duclos and Paul Pulver, Littler LLP

Nov. 101 to 2 p.m. ET
Week7

Who decides when AI is involved?

Why AI initiatives stall when leadership and governance fall behind, and a governance lens for decision rights, early signs of eroding trust and protecting judgment without slowing innovation.
