Termination Law Review 2027

Feb. 24, 2027 | 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. ET

Call for Speaker Proposals

We are now accepting speaker proposals for The Termination Law Review 2027: Clauses, Cases, and What’s Changed for Canadian Employers, HR Law Canada’s flagship annual case law roundup. The virtual event takes place on [date], 2027.

We’re looking for employment and labour lawyers from across the country to join a national panel for an audience of lawyers, in-house counsel, HR leaders and employers. Each panelist will bring the decisions that matter in their province or region, so attendees can see where the law is consistent and where it isn’t. (A limited number of speaking slots are reserved for event sponsors. This call covers the remaining panel seats.)

What makes a strong proposal

The best Termination Law Review sessions are built the way our coverage is built: grounded in real rulings, real contracts and real outcomes for employers, not theory. We’re especially interested in perspectives on:

  • Which termination clauses courts are upholding and which they’re striking down, including how ESA compliance, just cause language and without-cause provisions are being read
  • The key decisions of the past year in your jurisdiction, and what they change for how employers draft and enforce agreements
  • Common law notice, mitigation and damages, including bad faith, aggravated and punitive awards
  • Fixed-term and indefinite contracts, and what happens to bonuses, benefits and equity on termination
  • Practical steps employers should take now to review template agreements before their next hire or next termination

We are especially keen to hear from lawyers in Quebec, Atlantic Canada, the Prairies and British Columbia, so the panel reflects the whole country. Strong proposals in adjacent areas of employment law are welcome. What we’re not looking for: firm marketing pitches, generic “best practices” overviews, or anything an employment lawyer in the audience could have written from memory.

The format

The Termination Law Review runs as a [length] virtual event built around a panel of employment lawyers from different provinces. Panelists present their key cases and take part in a moderated discussion, followed by live audience Q&A. The event is recorded and made available on demand. CPD credits for lawyers and recertification credits for HRPA and CPHR members are being pursued.
